Signs of Arthritis in Pets

Is your pet slowing down? Do you think he may be developing arthritis? Our veterinarian at Alicia Pacific Veterinary Center in Laguna Niguel can help you make a definitive diagnosis, but before you come and see us, take a look at the below information about this common condition in older animals.

What Causes Arthritis in Pets?

Arthritis is described as the degradation of the soft tissue, specifically the cartilage and tendons that cushion the bones in the joints from rubbing against one another. Some large breeds of dogs are more susceptible to developing arthritis due to their skeletal structure. Age is always a contributing factor for both cats and dogs. Symptoms for arthritis can be mild or extremely painful. Each case should be evaluated by a veterinarian.

Signs That Indicate That Your Pet May Have Arthritis

Pets are known to hide pain well, but one suffering from arthritis can alert you to their suffering. The most obvious signs that arthritis may be inflicting damage to your cat or dog is when he is no longer running up the stairs, takes a moment before rising off the floor, and may even seem hesitant about going for a walk. Your pet may even whimper a bit when lowering himself to the floor. If you notice your animal suddenly choosing to sleep on the floor or another place where he doesn't have to jump or move around much, that may be an indication of arthritis. Your pet may seem agitated when being petted or will lick the joints constantly.
